Los Angeles-via-Michigan retro-soul crooner Mayer Hawthorne will perform at a sold-out Rickshaw Stop tonight (Tuesday).
That is, if his throat has healed. Hawthorne cancelled on Fresno last night citing strep throat.
Not a good sign for fans, but last night Hawthorne said via Twitter the San Francisco show is still on.
Hawthorne’s debut for Stones Throw Records, A Strange Arrangement, was released earlier this month and sees sweaty, brow-wiping falsettos amongst punchy, Motown-leaning soundscapes.
Like another white-dude-soul artist, Jamie Lidell, Hawthorne originated from the dance scene, previously spinning under the DJ moniker Haircut.
The transition from Haircut to Hawthorne was explained on a MySpace blog posting late last year, announcing the deal with Stones Throw.
“What started out as a sort of joke for close friends and family, has suddenly and unexpectedly become something very real,” he wrote.
San Francisco will have the chance to see just how real it all is at Rickshaw tonight.
Show starts at 8 p.m. with performances by Cambo, Buff1, 14 K T, and a VJ set from Peanut Butter Wolf. If you don’t have tickets, Craigslist that shit.
